Taiwan Day 1 & 2

This post has been lagging because I have been really busy these days at work. Today I forced Weeliem to go for Korean food with me for lunch but we reached there, pushed and pulled the door and saw the sign that says Seoul Garden closed on Sunday! So we walked over to Gurney Plaza for the BBQ buffet at the other Seoul Garden. Hmmmph..

So now let me bring you along on the journey to Taiwan in spring. I will try to make a comprehensive post.

Oh no, the first day when we arrived in Taoyuan International Airport, it was raining. We took the bus to Ximen directly, got down right in front of the MRT station NT$125. We had to pull our luggages in the rain with just one umbrella to where we stayed, Colormix about 7 minutes walk away.

After dropping our luggages, we went back to the MRT station and purchased Easycard at the price of NT$500 which contains usable value of NT$400 and deposit NT$100. We were supposed to get another Easycard from our friends but they were still at somewhere busy with their errands and could not meet up today. Anyway, we can still take from them on day 3 where we are going to have a trip together. The Easycard was redeemed in Singapore because Taiwan is having some sort of tourism promotion where you show the proof of your coming travel and they will give you a NT$50 Easycard. The best part of this card is that it doesn't have any deposit in it and you can keep the card as souvenir. I have mine with me still and the card is very pretty! Special edition from Taiwan tourism. The MRT station in Taiwan is very well mantained, just like Singapore and Hong Kong. I still don't understand why we can't do the same good job to the Komuter stations in Klang valley.

Anyway, our first stop was Long Shan temple. The route is pretty easy, just got down at Longshan temple MRT station and followed the direction on sign boards. It was raining pretty heavily so you could not see many people outside the temple.

We had this plan earlier that we wanted to eat beef noodle. How can you not eating the famous beef noodle of Taiwan when you came here right? We googled and found this shop called 688 (Niu Papa) at somwhere so we purposely got down at Zong Xiao Dun Gua station and walked around 20 minutes trying to locate the place.

We ordered different bowl of beef noodle, mine was spicy type NT$300 and Weeliem's one was the normal one NT$200. This shop sells some very expensive beef noodle, watch the price list at the menu NT$10000. The beef noodle here was not as good, we found a better one at Shilin market the next day where it was way cheaper ! NT$100.

After dinner, we took the MRT to Taipei City Hall station and boarded a free shuttle to Taipei 101. It was still raining and getting heavier and this makes photo shooting at outdoor really difficult. We walked to some 100 to 200 metres away or more to get some pretty good shoot of the building but the mist was covering much of the top pointy portion.

That's the end of our day 1 journey.

On day 2, we started out journey around 8am , took the MRT to Taipei Main Station and boarded bus from there to Yangming Shan.

The weather was cold that day added up we were going to the high land.

It was so hard to take a photo of us because we did not have tripod and we didn't want to give our camera to the China tourist.

Cherry blossoms

This is the famous flower clock which I think look nothing special. We saw the same clock at Little Swiss Garden in Qingjing.

After Yangming Shan, we took a cab to Beitou. Sight seeing mostly. Here's a quite entertaining fountain. I felt stupid for paying so much attention to it. Haha

This is a pretty unique building, I think a library or something

The next photo is nothing relevant in showcasing the nice places in Beitou but I think I look pretty natural in the photo, so why not?

Beitou Thermal Valley was closed that day, not sure why so we just managed to snatch a photo with the sign outside the place. What a waste to come so far for not a complete trip. :P

Not all of their trains are this pretty. We saw this very artistic painted train and quickly took a photo with it. The train conductor even waited until we finish shooting only he asked the driver to start moving. So kind of them.

Then, we took the train and went to Danshui. We strolled along the Danshui old street, ate some food. A-gei ball is so not nice but we ate a very yummy onion fried biscuit. We didn't want to walk some more so we just took a ferry to Fisherman Wharf instead of taking the bus.

Day 2 was a super long day and a tiring one. We still go shopping at Shilin market after that so you can guess I won't be able to shop much. I was too physically and mentally exhausted.

A photo of some kids wearing and makeup as ghost promoting a new movie or drama.. Not so sure. Never bother to ask, I was too tired. She looked straight into Weeliem's camera so that he could take a good photo of her

Salted fish

I have tons of photos to sort out before start writting on my Taiwan vacation. In one of the previous entry, someone asked me about the salted fish I use. So here it is:

I normally buy this from the morning wet market. It has to be kept in freezer and whenever you need to use, just slice a piece. The fragrance, hmmph, I can't tell you.

If I finished my supply above and if I happen to not go to market that weekend, I will get this from supermarket. It's almost equivalent in smell and taste. This jar doesn't need to be kept in freezer but it must be chilled all the times. I think it is mackerel fish pieces inside a jar filled with salted fluid. I am not very sure of the fluid content, but I am pretty sure it has oil in it. This jar actually has a label but I tore it off when I opened the lid the first time. The plastic label is also wrapping the whole jar, so that's why.

Brief cover page on our Taiwan vacation

We were back from Taiwan yesterday on Singapore Airlines. We flew there with AirAsia. It wasn't a promotion ticket so don't bother to ask us how much is our flight cost. It was a sudden trip that I had managed to convince Weeliem to go with me after months of persuades and bribes. We had a fun and interesting trip double date with my school friend and her fiance. They had their pre wedding photography in Taipei and we joined them for 4 days in Taiwan. The rest of the days we were on our own. It was a 6.5 D 7N trip because we reached Taiwan in the evening and left for the airport at 5 in the morning.

The special thing about our vacation this time is that we experienced an extreme weather change throughout our trip. The first two days was raining. It rained heavy making the Taipei wet, cold and freezing cold. Everyone was with umbrella. From what I heard from our taxi driver,it rains 6 months in a year and this year the winter prolonged. It was not supposed to rain anymore at the time when we had our trip but it still did. It was snowing at "Hehuan shan" and we were there after two days lucky for us that our car can make it up there because they had cleared the road and it stopped snowing. Snow is not melting yet so we stood a chance to see the mountain covered by snow and put our feet on them. There are cherry blossom too. We saw them on the way to " Hehuan Shan" within Taroko Gorge National Park and at "Yang Ming shan" at Taipei, both pink and white. After the 2nd day of rain, the sun came out. However it was misty at all the places we went due to the difference in temperature day and night. It was so cold at night and sunny in the day time. Most of us got really bad sun burn especially for my friend who were supposed to have their photography session the next day. Now both Weeliem and I are really tanned. You count, we see rain, sun, snow, mist, freezing cold and hot sun. Quite worth for a trip except that visiting places in heavy rain is really a torture. Obviously we did not bring jacket that is thick enough to sustain a 7 degree celcius (or lower) temperature because I thought the weather would be similar to Cameron Highland. Who the hell wear winter clothing to Cameron Highland? Luckily I packed 2 pairs of gloves and they kept our hands warm. Another thing that we never prepared for is on the humidity condition. We read from internet that the humidity is somewhat similar to Malaysia and none of use lotion or lip balm back in Malaysia because it's always so humid here. So we had really dried skin and broken lips during the trip until we bought sheep oil lotion and lip balm to save our poor skin and lips.

The food in Taiwan didn't really made an impression to me as I don't really fancy fried stuff. The roadside snacks all are not my favourite because they are fried food! except for grilled mushroom and wild boar chinese sausage. Weeliem and I don't like to eat while walking so we don't like to buy food at the night market. We ate 3 times of beef noodle (read : sit down on a chair in restaurant and eat in order), one of our all time favourite. 688 Beef noodle restaurant, a small restaurant in Shilin market and a restaurant at opposite of Shilin MRT station. The first was the most expensive beef noodle we had cost about RM30+ each bowl. They even sell RMB10000 beef noodle which translate to RM1050. The one at Shilin market was the best , cost about RM13 and the last one is nice as well cost about RM13 too. The thing I love on Taiwan food is their rice. It's very similar to Japanese rice, round and juicy, so yummy. I had beef rice when Weeliem ate beef noodle at the shop opposite Shilin MRT station. We also had rice at a shop operated by aborigines in Taroko Gorge, super yummy hot mexican beef with white rice. The beef in Taiwan are mostly imported from Australia so they taste really yummy. We also bought a packet of "buah pinang" to try. Our taxi driver kept asking us to test.

We tried the outdoor hot spring at Hualien. It was really relaxing to soak in HOT water facing the beautiful nature scenery(mountain). The water is at 41 degree celcius. We also had sauna and jacuzzi at the same place. The outdoor temperature is at around 16-18 degree celcius. Nice?

I am going to write more on the interesting and beautiful places that we had visited in next entry. I don't have any photos of those now. So now let me show you the clothes, shoes and bags that I purchased. I didn't buy any mask at all and not much food as well, there isn't enough time to do shopping because we were out on trip away from Taipei. Two of the bags and a top are for my sisters.

Salted fish fried rice

I always love salted fish, I mean everything with it. Salted fish gave this fragrance of saltiness that you can't get with anything else that similar to it, like dried cuttle fish. Fried rice is such an easy food to cook and it's very suitable for a small portion cooking. Mix a few ingredients into rice and just stir like mad! I purposely cooked extra rice and kept inside the fridge yesterday so I can fry rice today. The picture of my fried rice today looks not much different from other fried rice I made but the picture does not make justice to my lovely salted fish. It is not fair, because the hint of saltiness in every bite, and the tiny pieces of gem fills the air with excitement and joy. Remember no one (me) likes soggy fried rice, so make sure you don't add water/too much liquid when you are frying. Soggy rice is not chinese, it's italian (risotto) !

I used all my usual ingredients for fried rice and with the extra salted fish.

Salted fish fried rice (serve one)
1 small baby carrot, chopped into tiny cubes
2 cloves garlic (chopped)
1 chinese sausage (sliced into small pieces)
1 egg (beat)
1 small bowl overnight rice
1 small piece of salted fish. (I always see people use those long tail of tiny fishes. I don't. I hate those because they are hard and crunchy. I normally buy those in jar filled with salt mixture)

Steps
-----
Fry salted fish in 2-3 tablespoon in heated oil until both sides are cooked in wok
Saute garlic in the oil ( 6 seconds)
Add chinese sausage and carrot and stir (10 seconds)
Put the rice in and stir
Put 3-4 tablespoon soy sauce and stir (30 seconds)
Open up a small area in the middle of your work and heat a little oil
Pour the egg in and let it there for a few seconds
Stir everything for 40 seconds
Serve hot and smile big

Popsicles

There is this RM5 shop opened in Queensbay owned by Jusco. They sell all sort of Japan made stuff and most of the time, the stuff there are so cute and hard to find at somewhere else. But they are mostly useless. You can pick a few things and they totalled up to RM30 which is kind of nuisance because you spent RM30 over things that will add to your house of rubbish collection, went straight to the cabinet and you will not see it again. So we choose the item that we want to buy carefully. This is one of them, the popsicle mould!

I used to have this back at home where my mom got it free from buying Ribena. FOC. But I am so tempted to have my own popsicle at home because I'm sick of eating fattening cream ice cream by now.

I had used this mould 2 times so far, first when I made orange flavour popsicles and second, I squeezed lime juice out from real limes! and mix it to syrup made of screwpine leaves and sugar water ;) They are such a relief during hot day but anyway, I ate the lime popsicles during stormy weather yesterday.

Soy sauce pork belly stew

My sister stayed with us for the past few days. I actually wanted to cook this while she was here but we never get the chance, there are so many other food in list.

My ingredients are all by estimation.. Pardon me if they are not up to your expectation from the taste wise. But, Weeliem loved it. He said this is the most successfully try out. He has been saying this for so many times that I don't know if he really meant it.

1 stripe pork belly. Cut half so it's easier to sear in wok
2 star anise
1 cinnamon stick. I used powder
1 teaspoon five spice powder
3 rock sugar
5 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
1 bowl water
1 garlic, washed, unpeeled
5 chinese mushrooms, soften,halved
2 boiled eggs, peeled
pepper to taste

1. Sprinkle some salt and rub dark soy sauce on both side of pork belly.
2. Sear pork belly in work until lightly browned on both sides
3. Add oil in wok, put garlic, cinnamon, star anise and mushroom and saute.
4. Add the rest of ingredients in except eggs and bring to boil for 5 minutes
5. Add eggs in and simmer for another 50 minutes.
6. Serve hot with rice

Chocolate chip muffin

Today is a perfect day because I saw my husband in the morning when I woke up from sleep and it's not the other way round. I know it's kind of confusing for me to say this but what explain my words is that normally I am the one who gets up earlier and he will catch up afterward so he's the one that laying on bed and sees me when he force opened his eyes. See? To celebrate the perfect day, I made chocolate chip muffins. I am not an avid baker. I am mostly the dinner maker but I love using the oven. I love my small and not "costly" oven because it is the maker of many yummy food. There are so much things I can do with oven. I use my oven like at least once a fortnight. I bake chicken wings, BBQ chickens, my many own recipes chicken, shrimps, salmon and they are for our usual dinner. But this is the first time I use my lovely oven to bake muffin and I love it although my oven has a little flaw. The "flaw" is that it's over heated easily where the skin is always cooked and become dark before the inner side/dough lose it's damp texture.

I had an early swim with my sister in the morning despite the rumour my another sister(yes, I have many sisters) sent me about the radiation that might travel from Japan nuclear leakage. I googled in the morning and read about the past history of Chernobyl case where the radiation travel for 500km but Malaysia is so much further than 500km I guess it's fine. After having cheddar cheese breakfast, went out to run some errands and back baking muffins. It's such a relaxing day. And yeah, later it's mini bacon pizza with it's friends time ;)

On yeah, before I forgot, I used the chocolate chip muffins recipe from here

The recipe is a bit too sweet , which I think can reduce the chocolate chips by half the portion. The reason is the chocolate chips already over sweeten the whole mixture, and I can't blame the chocolate chips because I bought the less sweet Hershey chips.. They are so not guilty!

Belacan fried rice

I was so tempted to try on making my own belacan fried rice therefore I purchased a whole piece of belacan (shrimp paste) yesterday during weekly groceries shopping. I feel lazy to pound belacan in my newly bought mortar in jusco and I didn't do most of steps I supposed to. Actually, my recipe is own-made, so if you are really looking for a good one, just google it, plenty of fine looking recipes out there.

Ingredients:
2 bowls of overnight rice - serves 2
1 crab stick -cubes
1/2 fish cake - tiny cubes
1 chinese sausage -slices
large shrimps -6? or more.. depending on your need
1/2 baby australian carrot -tiny cubes
1 egg
2cm x2cm belacan
1 tablespoon cili boh
black soy sauce
soy sauce
pepper

There is no need to use salt because belacan usually is very salty. Just use your common sense and mix the above stuff in a work. lol

Red and green bean dessert

It is Saturnight. I cooked red and grean bean dessert for tonight's game. There is football at 11pm and I guess it will be nice to have dessert while watching. During our wedding day, my girl friends had a game where they had this mixture of red and green beans. I brought the food back because I do not want to throw edible stuff. Normally I only cook red bean, never a mixture. 2 hours ago, I scooped some into a pot, washed them throughly many times and boiled them in water until the beans are soften. I added sugar for sweetness and coconut milk for the frangrance. I like it except for the coconut milk because it wasn't as fragrant as what I thought it is due to the prepack sterilized coconut milk I purchased from supermarket. I wanted to buy fresh coconut milk but I wasn't going to market. I remember I bought a box packet before and it taste better as well. Anyway, I guess next time I will stick to fresh one.

26 Feb 2011

Today Weeliem cooked dinner. He wanted to do the cooking because I was very tired and had been really grumpy lately. That's the reason I did not post any new stuff as I have been cooking all the usual or food that I cooked before. My mind is too occupied with something else. I took a nap at 5.30pm and when I woke up, I can smell the scent coming from the kitchen. Bliss. He was making one of our preferred comfort food shrimp dish and stir-fry bean sprout (dou miao). I made this remark to him during dinner: "Whatever that you cook taste like my own cooking". Yes, it's true because he cooks like me. I made the recipe and I taught him all the steps. That's why the food he cooked taste like what I made. I think this is a pretty good progress indeed which means he can make real food now. I've been thinking a lot about our coming vacations and I can't help to imagine all the trips that we will be making together with Leng and Bryan. I was trying up some clothes in the evening , testing out different combination of jackets, dresses, tops that I will wear for our coming trip. Vain, isn't it. I hope not. I just want to avoid looking like a grumpy old lady in photos. I probably need a spring straw hat to complete the fashion match. I am looking forward for this trip because it's so hot over here in Malaysia. I can barely stand the heat if I go out in the sun nowadays. The pain when the sun got onto my skin, tingling pain. It's a honeymoon cum casual trip for us because we will be spending sometime alone together and other times with them. I'm longing for vacation since our Singapore visit last year in July. Overall, I am happy with Weeliem and I hope I still will for the next 60 decades considering I live up to almost 90... Best case I guess if the world hasn't end.

10 years old and a year old , old birthday

This is absolutely ridiculous making me not wanting to do any work anymore. I posted the same photo in facebook saying to unleash some of the stress I am having. Yes, I am dying to do something than thinking about how much work I am having, how much issues there are now and everyday, the stress I got from work and home..it's too much. Red spots popping out on my skin everywhere due to the amount of stress I am having...

The photo of my sister and I inside the pic was taken back at our old house in BBB. The house was full of boxes that time because my mom had been packing for years to move to the new house, which my parents are staying in now. The photo was taken in my room at hometown.

Our kitchen joint project for the year 2011

Since we are not supposed to celebrate valentine's day news1, so I guess we should not celebrate Mother's Day, World AIDS Day, Father's Day, Children Day and Women's Day as well since they are all advertising gimmick. Hope nobody celebrate Mother's Day with Rosmah in the future.

Anyway, to support in conjunction with V-Day we decided to cook at home to avoid falling into prey of those blood sucker that offer couple package. Our project cost is RM20 per pax. I think it's reasonable considering we have salmon, bacon, prawns and cocktail!

We had wild mushroom soup as starter. Baked salmon with olive oil, salt, basil and lemon slices on top while the fish cooking in the oven to avoid it from dehydrates. Sides are butter garlic baked prawn and asparagus wrapped bacon. We had the food with cocktail made of the citrus orange, grape wine in cold syrup.

Our first V-day after I become a Mrs.

Some 2011 chinese new year photos

Since I had to be away from home for the few most important days during chinese new year this time, meeting up with my family was really a happy thing. It was noisy and full of celebration atmosphere especially when WL and I arrived at my sister place. We saw the nieces jumping and shouting gong xi fa chai! gong xi fai chai! non stop, my parents, my sisters and bro in law.

I seldom post a picture of my sister and I. This is the amazing woman who gave birth to the 2 beautiful babies, works full time as a high profesional career and manages the household that looks like a breeze but in real is really tough. She baked a lot of cookies for cny slipped into her very very tight schedule. The lousy me already complaining not enough time to bake cookies when I have no kid and 2 days weekend off but she can make a dozen while attending to 2 kids, a big house to clean and only 1.5 days weekend. We were not very close as a kid because of the 1 year apart sister syndrome but we chat quite a lot nowadays and update on each other life occasionally.

When I arrived at their home, I straight away hold up my niece and she began manja-ing.

How comfortable is this baby niece sitting on my lap while sucking at her own thumb and watching tv.

I was helping Cheryl to tie up her super long hair , dressing up to visit my grandma.

A photo of myself before we depart to the restaurant for mom's birthday dinner CNY lou sang.

Happy faces when tossing fish salad. THis is the first time my mom ever lou sang in a restaurant. Watch her excitement!

Fireworks seen from our home in Penang.

Flood in Johore

It was a tiring day of CNY.. Anyway, this is what happening in some parts of Johore right now due to the continuous rain 2 days back and probably bad drainage system. Some houses are flooded and as you can see the palm oil trees are also under water, or half under water. Dirty muddy water is in their houses. This must be painful.

My best friend wedding in Alor Setar

I am friend with Her Hau for about 10 years now. I have some best friends at home whom I knew for about 15 years or more but Her Hau is the closest to me geography wise because we both went to same university, been housemates, roommate and working in the same department. Her wedding was held last weekend in her hometown Alor Setar. I went to Alor Setar with her before 4 years ago and stayed a night at her home. I am not sure if her mom still remember me but I do recognise their faces.

It is funny that Tze Yee was our course senior but Her Hau had never seen him before in university and talking about how they get together, the story is not too long or short. It is a clinging super love. lol. Tze Yee sang a song dedicated to his wife and gave some touching speech that night. What a lovely wedding.. everything was perfect.

To Mr & brand new Mrs Sim
Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth for the other. Now there is no more loneliness, for each of you will be companion for the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one... life before you. Go now to your dwelling place to begin the days of your life together. May your days together be good and long upon the earth.

Of course, must have my picture as well!

Lastly this is one of the nice picture Weeliem and I have ever took together. It was so hard to get him to pose for a picture where he was reluctant maybe because I am not qualified. But now after I forced and persuaded him, it is easier ;P. Love you Mr Chong!

Pineapple tarts

This is our homemade pineapple tarts. I always got to eat the tarts during chinese new year at home, either made by my mom or eldest sister. I used to help a little when I was still studying because I went back pretty early for the celebration to do spring cleaning. I called my sister numerous times to ask for the recipe and she finally gave to me last 3 weeks ago. I bought pineapples from home because my mom said the pineapples sold there were cheap and SWEEETTT!. Cooked the filling last weekend and kept in fridge until today I finally have some free time to bake the tarts. Of all the efforts, I managed to produce 3 containers, one for myself, one for my in laws and one for my sister/parents, depending on if any of them do not bake this year. Probably is my sister because she is so busy with working and 2 toddlers to take care of.

I had full days since Friday night, sleeping late because I was frying some food and yesterday busy cleaning, cooking, buying groceries and preparing a feast for her hau's bridal shower. At last I can sit down in front of my laptop and going to write all 360 I have. I got a bundle of them! Scary... It is the second time I broke my nailt this week, from house chores

Steamed yam cake

This is the steamed yam cake I made last night. We could not finish everything so I took some to office this morning. Suet Yin said I can add some fried dried shrimp on top, it will be more fragrant. I know that but I did not want to fry something at 11pm at night. I prepared, cut and cooked the ingredients and steamed it for 1 hour. Final product emerged at 12.30am. So I omitted the fied dried shrimp (xia mi) so save some hassle and avoid greasy night. Anyway the people that tasted the cake gave good feedback and I was quite a happy girl.

I used recipe from my sister

Malacca on 1-1-11

Finished writting focal at 10.45pm, I decided to make steamed yam cake because my dad gave me a yam last weekend and he reminded me to must use it within 3 days to preserve it's freshness. I came over to my desk to reply Ailene's IM and overcooked the batter. I felt a bit sad however let's look at the result later in 30 minutes? I used my sister's recipe from her blog. It is steaming for about 30 minutes already and another 30 to go. So, I am here breathing a little bit trying to dig something to update in my long time blog.

The just past weekend was New Year holiday. We went down to Malacca with my family for a short visit because Wee Liem wanted to shoot some photos, hoping to brush his skill in photography. I am very proud of him, really.

3 of us took a quick drive to town to visit St Paul but and could not find A Famosa, epic lol :P It was very jam so the "quick" is not so fast afterall. It took us like 2 hours to get there. Everyone was crowding Malacca during holiday season from all sort of places. We saw car plates from KL, Singapore, Selangor and Johore.

Big wall

@ Jonker street buying earings, RM1 each.

So here, we were at Portugese Settlement on New Year night

With lotsa lights decoration

I bought 3 packets of pop-pop , the lame "fire crackers" that gives you pop sound when you threw it againts hard object, eg floor. The kids were happily playing

The next morning, brother in law took us for dimsum breakfast and later Wee Liem, mom and I drove over to MMU to look around

For lunch, we went for chicken rice balls at Jonker street again and had cendol

Wee Liem took some great photos including this one, pretty.

We left afterward back home.. feeling very tired because for us, we drove 500km to reach there. Anyway, happy trip.
